Prunus serotina. Black cherry is the largest and most important native cherry to Michigan. The valuable wood is known for its beauty and quality, used particularly for furniture. Wild cherry syrup, a cough medicine, is obtained from the bark, and jelly and wine are prepared from the fruit. The fruit is edible and used in beverages and cooking. The green leaves turn to yellow in the fall. It is easy to grow on well drained soils and will reward you with dangling, lace-like blossoms in the spring. Wildlife eat the fruits. This is a fast-growing, pioneer species. 2-3 ft small trees.

***Favored to adapt well to climate change***
