Fairly productive native shrub of the eastern U.S. and a great wildlife food provider. Thicket-forming shrub that grows to a height of 8 to 15 ft. Yellowish-brown catkins are showy in late winter and early spring. Edible nut with ragged papery husk. Fall color varies from bright yellow to deep wine-red. The tasty nuts are highly prized by cooks for their easy-to-crack shells and small, sweet kernel. Hazelnut hedges can be used as windbreaks, visual screens, and to attract wildlife. 6-12” B-R seedlings.
